TSWBAT: Visualize and recreate a basic map of Europe Analyze a timeline Describe the how Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna changed Europe

Timeline of the French Revolution

French Democracy What happens each time another piece is changed or removed?

Napoleon’s Coup His military success in Italy and Egypt had already won him many admirers. In 1799 Napoleon uses his army to end the political chaos.

Napoleonic Code One set of secular laws for every person living in France Brought stability to legal, trade, banking and education systems. Ended Feudalism officially Became a model for legal systems throughout Europe

First Consul to Emperor First Consul in 1799 Emperor in 1804

Napoleon Builds his Empire

600,000 man army

Can you put up a fight if you are the Prince of one of these tiny German states? Should you even fight?

Napoleon Invades Russia Rather than fight Napoleon or pay him tribute, the Russians dare Napoleon to invade their country When he does, the Russians burn everything he might be able to use as he advances (Scorched Earth)

Russians want the French to see a whole lot of this…

Supply Lines

1812

Victory!? The French and Russian armies finally fight in Moscow and Napoleon is victorious. Napoleon takes control of the capital city and waits to negotiate terms for a Russian surrender.

The Russian Response…

Napoleon cannot maintain his supplies and is forced to go home…

Returning Home The French suffered greatly in the course of their retreat; the Army had begun as over 650,000 frontline troops, but made it home with less than 40,000. In total, French losses in the campaign were 610,000 against about 400,000 Russian casualties and several hundred thousand civilian deaths.

Napoleon is Surrounded Heartened by Napoleon's losses in Russia:  Prussia, Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Austria joined to fight against him. The French army loses to a force twice its size at the Battle of Nations in 1813  Napoleon suffered over 120,000 casualties. Something he never recovered from.

Fall of Napoleon Napoleon is exiled to the Island of Elba Escaped in 1815 Took power back from a new king Louis But lost the battle of Waterloo and was exiled to island of St. Helena Dies in exile in 1821, possibly of arsenic poisoning

Growth of Nationalism  Many of the people he conquered liked the simplicity of the legal code he brought with him, and kept it after he left  Still, they wanted to rule their own countries…not be ruled efficiently by an outsider  People living in the German states begin calling for a unified nation…so they can defend themselves

Multiple Choice Question Analysis

The Congress of Vienna 1815 Napoleon is defeated…now what? The major European powers (Austria, France, Prussia, Russia, and England) of the day met in Vienna, Austria to:  Sign a peace treaty  Redraw the map of Europe  Maintain a balance of power  Put kings back in power (conservatives) Even though many people called for a change in leadership (liberals)…like maybe more powerful congresses.

Questions: How did Napoleon change Europe? How did the Congress of Vienna change Europe?
