The Writing Process

Our Objectives What will we cover here? What is the writing process? Why use the writing process? What are the steps to the writing process? The purpose of writing How to solve your writing issues

What is Writing? Writing is much more than just putting words on a piece of paper. Writing is a series of forward and backward steps as writers think, reflect, revise, detour, start over, and repeat earlier steps.

Why Use the Writing Process? The biggest reason to use the writing process is that it makes your writing a lot more organized. It can also save a lot of time and confusion!

Steps in the Writing Process Can you put the following steps in the correct order? Revise Publish Pre-write Edit Present Draft

TOPIC: Steps of the Writing Process Step 1: Prewrite  Decide why you are writing and who will read it  Choose a topic  Gather ideas (Brainstorm)  Organize your ideas Step 2: Draft  Use your notes from prewriting  Get your ideas down on paper  Don’t worry about mistakes

Step 3: Revise  Add details and ideas  Delete ideas that are off topic  Substitute more interesting words  Rearrange sentences or parts of sentences Step 4: Edit  Check your spelling  Fix punctuation mistakes  Fix capitalization mistakes  Fix other grammar mistakes NOTE: Revision is NOT editing!

Step 5: Publish  Choose a format and stick with it  Neatly write or print a final draft  Add visuals if necessary Step 6: Present  Share with your audience

Prewrite (Brainstorming) Topic: There are many foods teenagers can make at home. 1.Soups 2.Sandwiches 3.Frozen pizza Brainstorming allows you to collect all of your ideas and research about your topic in one place.

Prewrite (Planning) You can use any of the following to organize your ideas: Outline Graphic Organizer Map or Web Venn Diagram Note Cards

Outline Example Topic: Foods that Teenagers Can Make at Home I. Packaged Foods A. Mac and Cheese B. Pizza C. Ramen Noodles II. Fruit A. Apples B. Bananas C. Grapes III. Frozen Food A. Pizza B. Hot Pockets C. TV Dinners

Drafting The writer will out the first version of the writing. Although writers do not usually worry about correcting errors yet, the fewer errors that exist, the easier the editing will be.

Write Your Own Draft Without worrying about grammatical errors, answer the following prompt in ONE PARAGRAPH: What is the best quality a teacher can have? (personality, caring, being fair, etc.) Why is this the best quality? How can this quality help students? *Once you are done, put it aside and don’t look at it.*

Revision In this step of writing, the writer does not focus on grammatical errors but on the ideas presented. This is where the writer will rearrange sentences, delete sentences that are off topic, or add sentences that are missing. NOTE: Revision is NOT editing!

Editing This part of the writing process is where the writer focuses on grammatical issues and format issues. In this part of the writing process, the writer needs to make sure that everything is presentable.

Publishing and Presenting Once the writer has completed the editing stage, then he or she is ready to publish their writing and present it to his or her audience.

Practice Problem/Solution Problem 1.Not enough topic information 2.Writing rambles 3.Reader doesn’t understand the point 4.Errors in writing Solution 1.Brainstorm 2.Outline/Plan 3.Plan or Edit 4.Edit

The Purpose of Writing The purpose of writing is simply to get your ideas from yourself to another person using written words. It is impossible to make your audience completely understand your ideas unless you write well. Following the writing process will help improve your writing!

My Expectations Use the writing process with every writing assignment. Use the writing process to solve your writing problems. Do your BEST not your LEAST!!
