Bellwork: Could you hit a home-run using a hockey stick? How likely is this?

Since you are using a hockey stick as a bat, it is not very likely to make any hit, let along a home-run. Similar to using the correct equipment in sports, you also need to use the correct tools in mathematics. So, let's look at how to choose and use the appropriate tools to solve math problems.

1. To build a hockey goal, you might use a hammer or a drill. While you wouldn't use a hammer or a drill to solve a math problem, you might use some of the tools and strategies listed below. Tools: Counters, Rulers, Algebra Tiles, Computer... Strategies: Estimation, Draw a diagram, Mental Math, Choose the correct unit... What are some more tools and strategies?

2. Describe a situation where you might use estimation.

3. You and your family want to spend the day at an amusement park, and buy a souvenir. You know that tickets for adults 12 and older cost $ Tickets for Children 11 and under cost $ And the souvenir you want to buy cost $ How much money should you take?

4. Vanessa wants to save $150 to buy a digital camera. She saves $12 each week, and her father gives her an extra $0.50 for each dollar she saves. Determine the number of weeks it will take Vanessa to save $150.

5. Raymond's goal is to read 4 hours every school week and Saturday. He reads every evening during the school week and Saturday and Records his time. Monday he read 35 minutes. Tuesday he read 40 minutes. Wednesday he read 1 hour 10 minutes. Thursday he read 30 minutes. Friday he read 35 minutes. How much time should Raymond read on Saturday to meet his goal?

6. Laura found the same coat on sale at four different stores. All the stores have the same original price. The first store has the coat on sale for 1/5 off. The second store has them on sale for 25% off. The third store has them on sale for one-third off, and the fourth store has them on sale one-fourth off. Which store has the best sale for the coat?

Mathematics is not just about numbers. You can also use words, symbols, and drawings to communicate mathematics. Being precise in your communication means using mathematical words accurately. Some words are used in everyday life as well as in mathematics.

1. Look up the word "Annex" in the dictionary. What does it mean? 2. Give two examples of how the word "annex" is used in everyday life. 3. How is "annex" used in mathematics? 4. Explain how you would solve Use correct mathematical vocabulary in your explanation.

5. Manny exercised 2/3 of an hour on Saturday. He then exercised 5/6 of an hour on Sunday. How long did Manny exercise altogether?

6. Catie is making bracelets for her friends using small rubber bands. She has 364 rubber bands and she wants to make 6 bracelets. How many rubber bands will she use for each bracelet? How many rubber bands will be left over?

7. When baking, it is important to use exact measures of ingredients. Kevin wants to double the recipe for carrot cake. A single batch requires 1 1/4 cup oil. He estimates he will need about 2 cups of oil. How much oil will he need? Why is estimation not a good strategy when baking?

8. Each school day, Daniel rides his bike from his home to his school. His school is 1.84 miles from his home. After school, he rides to the soccer field and then back home. The Soccer field is 1.75 miles from his school. His home is 3.6 miles from the soccer field. On Saturday, Daniel rides his bike from home to the soccer field and back home. He actually rides twice during Saturday to the soccer field, one in the morning, one in the afternoon. He does not ride his bike on Sunday. How many miles does Daniel ride every week between his home, the school, and the soccer field?
