Identified Problem Health Disparities in Delaware 2004: Indicators Report confirms that in Delaware many diseases disproportionately affect minorities

Health Disparities in Delaware Heart Disease Cancer Stroke Diabetes HIV Infections/AIDS Infant Mortality

Proposed Solution Provide ongoing education and training as a strategy for reducing and eliminating health disparities Educate and train allied health/social work majors and community partners on the use of the NLM on line resources

Methodology Pre/post surveys provided quantitative data Focus group sessions and homework assignments provided descriptive qualitative data Data were analyzed using SPSS software

Measures 75% of students in the CH&PP will be aware of the NLM online health and medical resources 100% of the University Seminar students trained will use one of the databases

Measures Inform 100% of households in Capitol Park of NLM’s online resources Train a minimum of 50 residents Post surveys will indicate that residence trained will be able to use the database

Milestones 51% of graduate social work students were trained 31% of undergraduate nursing & social work students were trained

Milestones 100% of occupied households in Capitol Park received information on NLM databases 76% of targeted 50 residents have been trained

Accomplishments Students, faculty and staff in the College have been trained DSU Library staff have also been trained

Accomplishments Students  Before training: 18% had heard of NLM online resources and 7% had used the databases  After training: 97% reported raised awareness of and an increased ability to use the NLM databases

Accomplishments MSW students incorporated the MedlinePlus database into their final class project MSW student provided NLM training to the staff at her field placement agency Community agency added the NLM website to their list of resources
