Unit 18 Inventions What will you think of next?

Thomas Edison

Bell and his telephone

Skimming 1.Write numbers 1-6 before each para. 2. Find out four thinking strategies in the passage. Think outside the box Take another look at it Make connections Keep trying

1. What is creativity according to the text ? Creativity is not about getting high test scores, having a high IQ or being smart. Instead, it is one of the most highly valued skills in society, is a matter of habits. Para.1

1.A plane crashed. Why was nobody in the plane injured? 2.When we cut a corner from a square-shaped desk with four corners, how many corners are left? All the people in the plane died. Five. Think outside the box

1. What is to “ think outside the box ” ? To try new ways to solve a problem. Para.2 2. What ’ s the author ’ s opinion about partial solutions and failures? Partial solutions, and even failures, give us more information and clues that help us move towards a better solution.

1. If we look at problems in as many ways as possible, we may A. find solutions that would otherwise remain invisible B. have different attempts and false starts C. improve our understanding D. make our ideas visible Para.3

Take another look at it

Are the eyes of the same height? Yes!

+ video phone + heating wires electric blanket Make connections

1.How do creative thinkers usually think of new applications and solutions? By comparing and connecting ideas and objects in new ways Para.4

Why did some great inventors force themselves to develop new ideas even when they were tired or did not feel inspired? They all knew that for each new invention that works, there are at least ten (inventions) that do not (work). Para.5-6

Madame Curie worked hard all her life to discover Polonium and Radium. It took Edison 15 years to invent light bulb.

Post reading Decide True or False 1 Most inventors have high IQs. 2 The things we know can sometimes make it more difficult for us to understand. 3 It’s impossible to learn how to be creative. 4 The best way to find a good solution is to look for one good answer. 5 Inventors try to avoid failure. 6 The more ways we have of looking at a problem, the more likely it is that we can find a solution. 7 Most good ideas are the result of a long process of trial and error. F F F F T T T

The examples have been mixed up.Can you place them in the right paragraph? 1.According to Leonardo da Vinci, problems which has seemed impossible could be solved if he changed the way he described the problem. 2.Thomas Edison made a rule saying that he had to make an invention every ten years. 3.Einstein, who changed the world of physics forever with his Theory of Relativity, preferred images to numbers. 4. Samuel Morse, the man who invented the telegraph, got his idea by watching a rider exchange a tired horse for a new one. (para2) (para5) (para3) (para4)

Homework: 1.Copy the useful expressions for two times. 2. Finish part II of 38’ in Unit 18.
