Does Artificial Light Matter? By: Sam, Aaron, Caleb, Shelby Team S.A.C.S. Introduction : Our question is “Does different artificial effect plant growth?” we made three different plastic containers with three different lights (Black Light, White Fluorescent Light, and a Green Light) and monitored the temperature. Our Hypothesis was that If the white light is more similar to the sun, Then it will make the plants grow in the most healthy way. We thought the other colors of light would cause a less than profitable decrease in plant growth. We believed that since the white light was the most similar to the sun, it would produce the most fruitful results. Methods: We took three empty soda bottles and cut them in half, then in the neck half of the bottle we filled it with Perlite and soil, along with 6 seeds for every container. In the bottom half of the bottle we placed a wick to funneled water to the top half, along with filling the bottom with water, we labeled each of these containers according to our names (I.E. “Caleb’s Plant – White Light”) and placed them in vertical plastic boxes, where the insides where lined in tinfoil, and placed a single light bulb in the top, in each of the boxes where two other plants. In the first container we had the Black light, along with Aarons plant, in the second we placed my plant along with the white light, and in the third we placed Sam’s plant with the green light. We let our plants sit in these containers for three weeks, all the while keeping track of their progress. We also recorded the height and mass of the plants. Acknowledgement: Mr. Willis Stacy Brody Results :D The results of this experiment is that we found out that Caleb's plant( or the one in white light) was the healthiest looking one out of Aarons and Sam’s. Caleb’s plant was a very healthy green, and had a very sound structure, it needed no supports, though it was only a few centimeters shorter than the other plants. Aaron’s plant was in black light and did not look healthy, the color was a faded brown color and looked rather sickly. It grew so fast it had no time to build its own inner infrastructure, and thus could not stand up on its own without the need of supports. Sam’s was in the middle with the green light and it wasn’t as terribly discolored as Aarons, nor as long and unstructured, however it still needed a support, an was still an odd shade of green. So we figured out that the white was the best one to grow plants in. The final height and mass of the plants – Caleb's: florescent light, 5.6g. Aarons :black light, 3.7. Sam’s: green light, 10.7 this is the mass for the plants. Height for the plants Caleb’s plant : 37cm, Aarons plant : 28cm, Sam’s plant: 32cm. We figured that we would find out different ways to find out if they (or we) think that there health without just looking at them, so we would look at the leaves, the steams and the thickness. Results Continued: We figured that we would find out different ways to find out weather or not their health was doing well without simply looking at them. So we studied their thickness, along with there height, and number of leaves produced, all the while keeping track within a notebook. This notebook was then used to create this poster. Conclusion: In conclusion, we placed six Mung Bean plants in three separate plastic water containers, cut in half and placed on top of each other. Within these plastic containers where of course, the seeds, soil, Perllite, and suspended above a small amount of water in the bottom half, connected by a wick, used to funnel water to the plant. These containers where placed under three lights, Aarons plant was placed underneath the Black Light, Sam’s plant was placed underneath the Green light, and Caleb’s plant was placed under the white light and left there for 3 weeks. We predicted the white light would produce the most fruitful results. After one week we noticed that the black light and green light where much taller than the white light, however the white light plant was much healthier. This trend continued for the next new weeks. At the end of the experiment the black and green light plants had grown expositionaly, but had grown so fast they retained no structure and where flimsy and on the verge of death, however the white light plant was only a few centimeters shorter and stood all alone with no support. our hypothesis was proven correct as the White light plant was the most successful
