Introductory Activity Using the sample context provided participants will stand and present a sample social story. Please ensure that you are including the following sentence structures: Descriptive Sentences Perspective Sentences Directive Sentences Affirmative Sentences

Social Story Sometimes when you are at PD you are asked to present. When this happens some people enjoy it and others feel anxious. When you are asked to do these things its often to increase learning and understanding during the PD. Some people enjoy presenting because they are used to doing it and feel confident. Some people feel anxious because it is new to them. If you enjoy presenting you will complete the presentation. If you are anxious you could ask the presenters for help and they will support you. Either way you will be happy you came to the PD and your presenters will be proud that you have learned about social stories.

Why? Increases student comfort level with certain situations. Increases understanding of situations that are new, different and/or confusing. Teaches expected responses to situations. Increases independence.

What? A tool for teaching social skills It is in the format of a story Can include visuals when appropriate

When? Social stories will be implemented at different times, intervals and frequencies based on the student’s need. Daily? ___x a day Prior to event taking place

Identify the Goal Context Reactions Reasons Context Reactions Desired Response Affirmation

Identify the Goal What is the aim of the story? What do you want to achieve? While building your story keep this in mind at all times

Context What happens? Where does it happen? Who is involved? What are they doing? Why are they doing it? Use “usually or sometimes” not “always”

Reactions Describe the reactions of others in the situation. What are their responses? What are their feelings? What are their opinions? Reactions are the emotional responses and feelings associated with certain situations

Reasons ContextResponses Context: The reason the social situation has occurred. Response: The reason the individual is experiencing the current emotion. Some social stories may require both and some only one.

Desired Responses What is the expected response in the social situation? Focus should be on teaching positive expected behaviour or responses in order to replace less expected behaviour

Affirmations Affirmation statements are positive comments that help the student understand how his/her behaviour affects the feelings/perceptions others have about them. Enhancing the understanding of why the student would use the expected behaviour. Relationships are reaffirmed through these statements.

Steps to Achieving Goal Fade Adjust Incorporate Introduce Create Identify Identify the target behavior. Create the Social Scenario. Introduce the story. Incorporate the story into the person’s schedule. Adjust the content if progress is not being made. Fade the story when the desired goal is maintained and reintroduce if needed.

Adjusting for Progress If the person is not responding to the story, you might need to adjust the content or visuals being used to resolve confusing wording or imagery. It might be necessary to change the presentation of the story. For example; use PowerPoint on the computer instead of a handwritten booklet to present the story.
