THE CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING THINGS

Classification Classifying living organisms is called – taxonomy Founded by Carolus Linnaeus (1700 s) Species were grouped based on physical characteristics

Naming Organisms Each organism is given a two - word name – Binomial Nomenclature The first word – genus; the second word – species Human groups: they all belong to the same genus Homo sapiens, Homo erectus, Homo habilis, Homo neanderthal

The Classification of Living Things Homo erectus Homo habilis Homo neanderthal H

The Classification of Living Things Dog like groups: the same genus, different species Canis familiaris - dog Canis lupus – coyote Canis latrans - wolf

The Classification of Living Things Hierarchy of Groups Each kingdom is divided many times into smaller and smaller groups (taxa, taxon – singular) Species is the most specific taxon – to be included in the same species organisms must be able to interbreed and produce fertile off springs

The Classification of Living Things 7 levels of similarities (7 Taxa): from the least specific to the most similar Kingdom (the least similar taxon) Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species (the most specific, similar taxon)

The Classification of Living Things Wolf Panther Share the same taxa: kingdom, phylum, class, and order Belong to the different taxa: family, genus and species
