Family Background Prometheus is a Titan/god Prometheus is the son of the Titan Iapetus His mother is Clymene, a nymph His brothers are: Epimetheus (who was not as smart as him), Atlas, and Menoetius

Family Prometheus married Celaeno His children were: – Deucalion – Lycus – Chimaereus Deucalion

Powers Titan/ god of forethought- thinking about something ahead of time He is also the benefactor of mankind He also has the power of prophecy Prometheus also had the ability to see the past and future

Mankind Prometheus and his brother, Epimetheus, were given the job of molding mankind out of clay and water He created men, not women. The creation of man caused the creation of woman He was very friendly towards mankind

Myth of Prometh eus Prometheus asked Zeus to bring fire to the mortals, because they were freezing and dying. Zeus told him no, so he was forced to steal fire. In order to please Zeus, Prometheus sacrificed a bull, but tricked Zeus with it. He hid the worst meat on the bull under a thick layer of fat, and wrapped the best part in the bull’s stomach( the most un-appetizing part). When Zeus chose the worst part(without knowing it), Prometheus gave the other half to the mortals. Then Prometheus snuck up to Helios in Mt. Olympus, lit a torch, and delivered the fire to mankind.

Pandora Because Zeus was very angry from the bull trick, he created a woman, Pandora, and sent her to Prometheus’ brother, Epimetheus. She brought a box that contained war, poverty, disease, & evil, and when she opened the box, Zeus had his revenge on the mortals.

Fire Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and the gods at Olympus. He did this because he felt animals were more advanced than mankind, which he created, and he wanted to give mankind an advantage (fire). Also, mankind was dying of the cold, and from the inability to cook food.

Eternal Punishment As punishment he was chained for all eternity in Caucasus (mountains in modern-day Russia) There, an eagle ate his liver, and every day a piece of it would grow back. This was an endless cycle until Heracles killed the bird.

Rebellion When the gods rebelled against the Titans, Prometheus fought with the gods, instead of with his father. But he never fully respected the Olympians because he felt they had no compassion for mortals.

The original “Dr. Frankenstein” is considered a modern-day Prometheus Dr. Frankenstein and Prometheus both created some form of man. Connection to “Frankenstein”
