Westward Expansion Learning Target: I can analyze primary sources to investigate why the United Sates believed in Westward Expansion. Do Now: Observe the painting “American Progress” Hand in flipbook

 Do Now: Observe the painting “American Progress” and answer the following questions:  What do you see in the painting?  What direction is the woman heading?  What does she represent? How is this symbolized in the painting?  What message is trying to be told in the painting? Westward Expansion

American Progress: What message is trying to be told in the painting?

 Journalist  Created the “United States Magazine” and “Democratic Review”  First to coin the term “Manifest Destiny” John O’Sullivan

“America is destined for better deeds. We have no interest in the scenes of antiquity, only as lessons of avoidance of nearly all their examples. The expansive future is our arena, and for our history. We are entering on its untrodden space, with the truths of God in our minds, beneficent objects in our hearts, and with a clear conscience unsullied by the past. We are the nation of human progress, and who will, what can, set limits to our onward march? Providence is with us, and no earthly power can. We point to the everlasting truth on the first page of our national declaration, and we proclaim to the millions of other lands, that "the gates of hell" -- the powers of aristocracy and monarchy -- "shall not prevail against it." Who, then, can doubt that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity?” John O’ Sullivan, “The Great Nation of Futurity”

 Independently read the excerpt  Highlight and annotate  With your group, create a definition of the word manifest destiny.  Answer the following questions:  According to the text what does John O’Sullivan think America stands for?  According to the text what is America’s goal/mission? John O’Sullivan’s Manifest Destiny

 Manifest  Clear and obvious Destiny events are sure to happen Manifest Destiny suggested that expansion was not only good for the United States, but bound to happen. What does Manifest Destiny Mean?

 O’Sullivan thinks Americas stands for success and greatness. In the text it states “ Who then, can doubt that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity?(O’Sullivan)” This shows that O’Sullivan is confident in the capabilities of the United States. Due to the past success of the United States with inventions and creations as he refers to as “human progress” he feels they will continue to grow and succeed. Ace Response Question 1

 According to the text America’s goal is to full fill their “Manifest Destiny” and expand to the west. In the text it states “ We are the nation of human progress, and who will, what can, set limits to our onward march?(O’Sullivan)” This shows that O’Sullivan feels that the U.S. should expand or “march” to the west and that no other country or group can stop them. O’Sullivan also uses a confident tone to show that the U.S. will be successful in the future. Ace Response 2
