Meaning of Manifest Destiny  Observe the painting by John Gast.  Identify 5-10 nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs from the painting.  You will be able to view a copy of the picture on the next slide.  You may also look up the painting on the color copy you have been given. PLEASE do not write on the color copy!

Coining of “Manifest Destiny” John O’Sullivan  Strong supporter of American Westward Expansion.  Published several articles between 1839-1845 that used the phrase “Manifest Destiny.  “…the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.”
