Childhood Obesity Rates have doubled in children in the past thirty years 18% of children are obese in the United States 1 in 3 children are considered overweight Overweight is having excess body weight and obese is having excess body fat Obese children are at a higher risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes as adults Overweight and obesity is the result of “caloric imbalance”—too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed Physical Activity helps balance this

Fighting Obesity is important, but exercise can do that and so much more for our students!!

Exercise can:  Grow new brain cells  Reduce stress  Boost brain function  Improve mood  Increase learning  Promotes eye fitness Memory retrieval is more efficient when learned through movement.

What is TAKE10!?  A curriculum that consists of ten minute periods of physical activity linked with core academic concepts in Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.  Developed by ILSI Research Foundation in  Used in over 55,000 elementary schools in the Untied States  Educates students on the importance of fun, physical activity, and other healthful behaviors, including nutrition.  All while reducing sedentary behavior, improving attention, and promoting structured physical activity breaks during the school year.

 Well-developed breaks can help students stretch, develop flexibility, improve coordination, and gain focus for the next lesson.  Using physical activity challenges in the classroom helps children be ready to learn and remember information better.  “85% of school age children are natural kinesthetic learners. Year at a Glance First two weeks of school – take “Brain Break” to introduce the Take 10 program and fully explain the Active Lesson that will be done later in the day Third week through the rest of the school year – Implement “Brain Breaks” during the designated brain break time in the classroom Take 10 Lesson Subjects Mondays – Language Arts Tuesdays – Science Wednesday – Social Studies Thursday – Math Friday – Extra review for any subject that needs it or a fun lesson Nine Weeks Theme Schedule for Destination Take 10! 1 st Nine Weeks – North America and South America 2 nd Nine Weeks – Europe 3 rd Nine Weeks – Antarctica and Africa 4 th Nine Weeks – Asia and Australia

Relay for the States 1 st person-Hop 2nd person Skip 3 rd Cross Crawl 4th Grapevine On “GO” have the students first hop to the states and bring it back Have them identify the state and the capital and write it down Have the next student on their trip to the states skip, then cross crawl, then grapevine, then run and repeat The winner is the first team to collect all their states and have them correctly labeled and spelled The winning team can then pick the physical activity that the class can do as a whole

Beach Ball Multiplication  There will be two Beach balls bouncing around.  When you catch it call out the number that your left hand lands on and an exercise if your ball has one.  The class will then multiply the two numbers and do that beach exercise for the number in the answer.
