Rectangles, Parallelograms and Squares Area and Perimeter

Objectives The students will be able to… determine the difference between area and perimeter. Calculate the area and perimeter of parallelograms and rectangles. Solve for the missing pieces of rectangles and paralellograms.

POLYGON A POLYGON is a “closed” shape A POLYGON is made up of line segments that do not cross. The number of sides gives a POLYGON its name POLYGON NOT POLYGON

Definitions Area: number of square units covered by a polygon. Perimeter: distance around a polygon.

Area of a Rectangle To find the area of the rectangle……

Another way… Use the formula for area of a rectangle: A = lw Example: A = 9(15) A= 135 in 2 The area of the rectangle is 135 in 2 15 in 9 in

How would you get the perimeter? Your answer: Add up all of the sides Formula: P = 2l + 2w Example: If the length of a rectangle is 12 inches and the width is 7 inches, what is the perimeter?

Some more difficult problems… If the area of a rectangle is 108 sq. in and the length is 6 inches, a) what is the width? b) what is the perimeter? If the perimeter of a rectangle is 48 feet, and the width is 16 feet, what is the area of the rectangle?

Try these Please!!! 1. Find the area and perimeter of a the following rectangle, 8 cm 14 cm 2. If the perimeter of a rectangle is 300 feet and the width is 30 feet, what is the area?

How about a Parallelogram??? Two things needed to find the area of a parallelogram are: 1) 2)

Parallelogram Formula: A = bh If the base of a parallelogram is 6 ft and the height is 10 ft, what is the area of the parallelogram?

It can also go like this….

What is the area of this parallelogram? 11 in 9 in
