Applied Geometry Lesson 1 – 6 A Plan for Problem Solving Objective: Learn to use a four-step plan to solve problems that involve the perimeters and areas of rectangles and parallelograms.

Definitions Perimeter: the distance around a figure. Formula: an equation that shows how certain quantities are related.

Perimeter of a Rectangle

Find the Perimeter A rectangle with a length of 17 and a width of 8. 9 m 5 m P = 2(5) + 2(9) = 10 + 18 = 28 meters P = 2(17) + 2(8) = 34 + 16 = 50 units If the units are not mentioned include ‘units’ in your answer.

Area Area of a figure is the number of square units needed to cover its surface. How could we figure the area of the floor?

Area of a Rectangle

Find the area of the Rectangles A rectangle with a length of 8.2 and a width of 2.4 meters. P = (10)(14) = 140 in 2 or square inches P = (8.2)(2.4) = 19.68 m 2

Parallelogram height base

Area of a Parallelogram

Find the area of the Parallelogram Parallelogram with a height of 6 and a base of 8. *Hint you do not need all of the information* P = (5.2)(4) = 20.8 m 2 P = (6)(8) = 48 units 2 or sq. units

Four-Step Plan 1. 2. 3. 4. Explore the problem Plan the solution Solve the problem Examine the solution
