Cohan….. Born in New York in 1925 Trained at Martha Graham School Began his professional career in 1946 performing with her company Became soloist Performed throughout the world as a partner to Graham herself

In 1967, he became the artistic director for London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT) He directed there for the next 20 years

Cohan’s influence on the development of modern dance In Britain has been considerable He pioneered the teaching of contemporary dance in Britain He created many works for the company

LCDT…. Cohan encouraged home grown talent and choreographers such as; Richard Alston Siobhan Davies Robert North

Cohan retired as full time artistic director of LCDT in He remained there on a half yearly basis It was hard to fill his role and LCDT ended up disbanding and they formed Richard Alston Dance Company at ‘The Place’ in 1994

Through LCDT’s 25 years….. It achieved significantly inartistic and educational fields Cohan and dancers gave open classes and rehearsals in schools, colleges. It helped raise awareness of contemporary dance in Britain
