La Mafia Italiana How did it start? Modern Italy formed: Sicily was ignored. Local people took it upon themselves to protect themselves and the Mafia was born.

La Mafia Italiana Traditional Mafia 1860s – 1940s. Acted as a police in Sicily. Sense of honour. Familial ties. Poor people. Protected community.

La Mafia Italiana Transitional Mafia 1950s and 1960s. Relationship between Mafia and politics. Mafia became richer. Moved into construction.

La Mafia Italiana Entrepreneurial Mafia 1970s to today. Became involved in international criminal activity. Heavily involved in drug trafficking. Mafiosi themselves involved in politics. Became richer, more business orientated.

La Mafia Italiana What do the Mafia do? Pizzo: protection (tax) of Sicilian businesses. Drug trafficking. Smuggling. Construction. Money lending. Refuse collection (Naples). Annual turnover of €6.5 billion.

La Mafia Italiana Omertá Code of silence. No-one in Sicily talks about the Mafia because they know and fear that they will be punished. «La miglior parola è quella che non si dice.» Punishable by death.
