What does SATs stand for? Statutory Assessment Tasks and Tests (also includes Teacher Assessment) At the end of Key Stage 1 (at age 7) and at the end of Key Stage 2 (at age 11) 25 June 2016

Key Stage 2 SATS changes New curriculum introduced in 2014/5 which is more rigorous and sets high expectations 2016 Year 6 will be the first to be assessed against the new curriculum Old National Curriculum Levels have been abolished New scaled score used to reflect if a child has met the ‘expected standard’ No level 6 tests 25 June 2016

What is the expected standard? Previously level 4 was the expected standard. Without levels there are now descriptors for working towards the expected standard, working at the expected standard and working above the extended standard. These are included in your handouts. 25 June 2016

How are we supporting children to reach expected plus? Miss Webster 25 June 2016

How are the children assessed? For children working at the expected standard and above, there are two sorts of assessments: A) Teacher assessments B) Tests For children working below expected, the only statutory assessment is teacher assessment and those children do not take the tests. 25 June 2016

What does teacher assessment involve and is it different from testing? Teacher assessment draws together everything the teacher or teachers know about a child, including normal class lessons, observations, marked work and school assessments. Teacher assessment is not a ‘snapshot’ like tests and is therefore more reliable. Due to the above, there can be a difference between teacher assessment results and test levels. Teacher assessment only, is used for children who work below expected levels 25 June 2016

Teacher Assessments: English: Speaking and Listening Reading Writing Maths: Using and Applying Number and Algebra Shape, Space and Measures Handling Data 25 June 2016

Teacher Assessments: (cont.) Science: Scientific Enquiry Life Processes Materials and their Properties Physical Processes 25 June 2016

When do KS2 tests happen? This year the test dates will be in the week Monday 9 th May 2016 Please do not take your child out of school during this time and in the weeks leading up to the tests. 25 June 2016

ENGLISH 25 June 2016

Reading Comprehension As in previous years, the texts in the English reading booklet will not be linked by a theme. The booklet will contain three or four different texts. The least demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty Children will have a total of one hour to read the texts and complete the questions at their own pace. It is expected that roughly 15 minutes is spent reading and 45 minutes answering the questions. 25 June 2016

The reading answer booklet will comprise of approximately 35 to 40 questions (totalling 50 marks). The questions are: shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching questions) shorter, open response items longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding. Questions are worth 1, 2 or 3 marks. 25 June 2016

English grammar, punctuation and spelling A statutory test of English grammar, punctuation and spelling was introduced for children at the end of Key Stage 2 from May June 2016

The test will assess children’s abilities in the following technical aspects of English: grammar; punctuation; spelling; vocabulary. 25 June 2016

Examples: Circle all the adverbs in the sentence below. Open the drawers carefully and quietly when using the filing cabinet. Add a suffix to this word to make an adjective. dread ______________ 25 June 2016

Underline the subordinate clause in each sentence below. One has been done for you. Although his Mum thought they were very smart, Peter disliked his new trousers. Before he could go swimming, Ali packed his towel. 25 June 2016

Complete the sentence below with a contraction that makes sense. If you give me the recipe____________ buy the ingredients on the way home. 25 June 2016

MATHS 25 June 2016

The mathematics test consists of: two reasoning test papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each lasting minutes mental arithmetic test, lasting 30 minutes Children’s marks from all three tests are aggregated to calculate their overall mathematics score/level. Teachers may read questions in both written papers to pupils if asked. 25 June 2016

How is SATs week organised? A timetable is issued to school, telling us on which days tests must be administered. All children must sit the tests at the same time. Tests are completed in classrooms, with any displays that may help covered over. The LA monitor 10% of schools per year – this will increase this year. Children may be divided into groups for test administration to ensure they are properly supported and feel secure. 25 June 2016

What help can children have? In the reading test, children must read the text and questions by themselves. In maths papers 1 and 2, teachers can read questions to any child who asks. Also in the SPAG test, children can ask for questions read to them but nothing can be explained. Some children may be entitled to additional time if this is normal practice. 25 June 2016

How can parents help? The best help is by taking an interest in your child’s learning and progress. Giving positive encouragement. Supporting the completion of homework. Fun websites: BBC Bitesize/Mathletics/Woodlands junior school Not putting children under too much pressure. Ensuring children arrive for tests: - in good time -having had breakfast -having gone to bed at a reasonable time! 25 June 2016

Results will consist of: a raw score; a scaled score and a statement relating to the expected standard 25 June 2016 Reporting Results
