Types of Energy Chapter 9. What is Energy? Energy is the ability to do work.
Energy is said to be the ability to do work. That means the ability to make something happen. By “happen” it means to make things move or change condition.
Kinetic and Potential Energy have many forms. 1. Mechanical Energy - Energy associated with motion or position.
Energy: Forms and Changes. Forms of Energy  The five main forms of energy are: Thermal (heat) Chemical Electromagnetic (electricity and light) Nuclear.

POTENTIAL KINETIC Stored energy or energy of position Gravitational, Stored Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical Energy of motion Motion, Electrical, Sound, Radiant, Thermal Types of Energy

Gravitational Energy – energy of an object or substance has because of its position/ when it is lifted up. Anything “up high” Potential Energy

Stored Mechanical Energy – stored in an object by its position or its motion.A spring is an example. Must push or pull on an object Potential Energy

Nuclear Energy – energy stored in the nucleus of an atom A nucleus is at the center of every atom Nuclear Energy – energy stored in the nucleus of an atom A nucleus is at the center of every atom Potential Energy

Chemical Energy – energy stored because of its chemical makeup. Released by chemical changes in matter. Potential Energy Gasoline wood foodbattery

Mechanical (Motion) Energy – movement/ interactions of objects or substances from one place to another Kinetic Energy Kicking a soccer ball Gears on a ship Water falling

Electrical Energy – movement of electrons Energy that is carried by an electric current Kinetic Energy

Sound Energy – movement of energy through substances in the form of vibrations. Kinetic Energy

Radiant/ Light Energy – electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves Kinetic Energy sunlight Radio waves microwave

Kinetic Energy Thermal (Heat) Energy – internal energy of a substance due to the motion of particles making up the substance.

1 – Energy can not be created nor destroyed, only changed. Law of Conservation of Energy 2 – Energy will always transfer from high to low. 3 – No energy transfer is 100% efficient. Energy Transfers

Name the Transfer Chemical to Mechanical

Name the Transfer Radiant to Chemical

Name the Transfer Electrical to Thermal

Name the Transfer Chemical to Mechanical

1.Energy does work or causes matter to change. 2.Energy can not be created nor destroyed, only changed. (law of Conservation) 3.Energy always transfers from high to low. 4.Energy transfers are never 100% efficient. In Review
