Able to learn from mistakes  Confident … Opportunities to practice important skills  Efficient … Knowledgeable and well-practised  Adaptable … Familiar with a range of dispensing environments and relevant software systems  Prepared … and confident to effectively deliver current and future pharmacy services

What is MyDispense? Dispensing with “training wheels”

What is MyDispense?  Purpose designed, educational dispensing program  Designed and developed by Monash University, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences  Supports students to develop and practice dispensing skills

Educational environment  Web-based pharmacy simulation software  MyDispense can be programmed to accommodate the level of the student learner  The software is used in tutorial classes in conjunction with tutorial notes and a tutor explaining the theory to support the dispensing process

Education  Learning through exploration  Fundamentals of good dispensing practice are taught and practiced  Provides a simulated dispensing environment  No built in prompts

MyDispense database currently includes:  39,000 items dispensed since March 2011  1,130 active products  1,176 student accounts  406 patients

MyDispense: Opportunity to learn and Practise Simulates electronic dispensing Virtual product selection Barcode scanner for verification of selection Label placement Assembly of medicines and handover to patient Patient and Doctor Fact Finding Feedback Delivers exams 11

Dispensing prescriptions involves a process which runs across distinct stages  Think about prescription to be dispensed  Enter prescription details into computer  Check computer input  Review computer generated label then print it  Select and scan drug  Check then attach the label  Assemble prescription  Final check at patient collection of prescription Year 1 Semester 1 Year 1 Semester 2 Later years
