P LAGIARISM What is it and how to avoid it

P LAGIARISM Plagiarism is defined as taking, using, and passing off as your own, the ideas or words of another Plagiarism is a very serious academic offence, and can result in your paper being automatically failed The best way to avoid plagiarism is to take careful notes of where you find your information, and always acknowledge the work of others

W HAT IS PLAGIARISM ? Plagiarism is: Directly copying from someone else’s work without presenting the text as a quote and/or without acknowledging the source Paraphrasing without acknowledging the source Using any form of information that is not your own original work without acknowledging the source

W HAT IS PLAGIARISM ? Common forms of plagiarism are: To produce a paper in collaboration with another person/s if the paper should be the student’s own To hand in a paper that is produced by someone else To assist another student in plagiarising Please note that there can be more types of plagiarism than is listed here

P ENALTIES FOR PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is strictly prohibited at all academic institutions around the world Plagiarism is explicitly prohibited according to the Peking University Graduate's Brochure (see e.g. page 30 and 38) There are severe penalties for plagiarism, including your paper being automatically failed Your teacher will be able to tell you about other possible penalties for plagiarism

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM As long as you always provide proper citations every time you use other people’s work – both when quoting and paraphrasing – your research will be clear and credible and you will be in a good position to avoid plagiarism If you are uncertain regarding any aspects of your work and feel that you may do something that is not allowed, please consult with your teacher before submitting your paper Remember – it is always ok to ask if you are unsure about any rules or regulations!
