1930’s Drought The Great Plains were hit with a drought during the 1930’s. The crops that were farmed in this area dried out and went to waste. Since the farmers didn’t have crops to sell, they couldn’t afford to keep their house or their land. The fields soil turned to sand. It didn’t help that the stock market crashed in People were desperate and dirt poor. image:

Black Sunday Black Sunday is the name for one of the largest dust storms to hit the southern Great Plains. It was Image:

California is the Answer!!!! Farmers and their families started migrating west to California. They were on the search for jobs and a place to settle their family. They thought they would work in the fields picking fruits and vegetables. The arrow was pointing to the promising and dream land, California. Most farmers traveled Route 66 into their awaiting new life. Their vision of California Image:

Reality By the time farmers came into California they realized how different life was from back home. Most of the farming was owned by big industries. There weren’t many field positions for farmers since immigrants worked these types of jobs. A lot of the farmers were not welcome and were usually referred to as “Okies” & “Arkies”. Life was very different than what they imagined. It was just as hard in California to find a job than it was in Oklahoma. Image:

Poverty Is The Norm. The farmers who traveled to move away from the dust bowl found themselves with the same problems they faced at home. They were still poor They could not find jobs or people willing to hire them They lived in tents or shacks Children were still malnourished and dying Life was still very miserable A lot of companies who had surplus of fruits or vegetables would destroy them before giving them to the homeless or starving, just so they could keep their prices high Images:

Hard Times Everyone was having a very rough life during these times. The dust bowl and the great depression were very difficult times for Americans. Depression, starvation, & poverty, it couldn’t get worse than that.
