Christian teachings on forgiveness and reconciliation Learning Outcomes To explain Christian beliefs about forgiveness Key words Forgiveness – the act of stopping blaming someone for what they have done wrong Reconciliation – bringing people together who are opposed to each other Starter Look at the image. If this boy was in your family, would you be able to forgive those who were responsible? Why?

Christianity is based on the concept of forgiveness and reconciliation Christianity is based on the concept of forgiveness and reconciliation. Most Christians believe that humanity had become split from God through sin, but the forgiveness of sins brought by the death of God’s son, Jesus, has allowed reconciliation between God and humans. Christianity teaches that Christians should be committed to forgiveness and reconciliation when there are conflicts between family and friends. Christians believe that the power of forgiveness and love can lead to reconciliation and the ending of conflict.

Christians believe they should forgive and try to bring reconciliation because: Jesus died on the cross to bring forgiveness and reconciliation When Peter asked if he should forgive his brother up to seven times, Jesus told him that he should forgive up to seventy-seven times Jesus said if people do not forgive those who have sinned against them, God will not forgive their sins St Paul said Christians should try to live in peace with everyone.
