Cause and Effect

Types of cause and effect Cause and Effect chain One cause, multiple effects Multiple causes, one effect

Cause and Effect Chain We most commonly see the cause and effect chain in stories. The first event causes a second event. The second event causes a third event. The third event causes a fourth event and so on.

Cause and Effect Chain CCause Effect (Cause) Effect (Cause) Effect

EXAMPLE Cause and Effect Chain The dog stopped and smiled at Opal. Opal went to the Winn Dixie store to buy macaroni and cheese. Opal saw a big dog run around the corner. The dog stopped and smiled at Opal. Opal said the dog was hers, even though it wasn’t. The store manager ordered his employee to call the pound. Cause and Effect Chain Because of Winn Dixie And the chain continues…. EXAMPLE

In informational text, we are more likely to see the other two cause and effect structures. One cause with multiple effects: Ex. one event results in three separate unrelated effects which happen at the same time. Multiple causes that combine together to cause one effect: Ex. Three events that work together to cause one effect.
