WARM-UP WHY STUDY POLLUTION AND HEALTH?

State standard E Explain the interrelationship between the environment and personal health. ozone layer/skin cancer availability of health care/ individual health air pollution/respiratory disease breeding environments/ lyme disease/west nile virus

What you will learn! Define the words environment and ecosystem. Analyze the elements of an ecosystem. Discuss environmental problems caused by human activities.

Looking at Vocabulary Environment – Your surroundings Ecosystem – All living and nonliving elements in an area where they are related. Groundwater – Water below earth surface Toxic – Substance are harmful or poisonous to humans and animals. Pollution – Dirty or harmful substance in environment. Environment Ecosystem Groundwater Toxic Pollution

Health and the Environment Healthy ecosystem depends on the well-being of the parts. If one part is damaged all the other parts are affect. IN WHICH WAY ARE THEY AFFECT? Interdependence environment Producers – Make new resources. Consumers – Use resources Nonliving Elements ( rocks, soil, etc.) Decomposers – Break down plants and animals

Air pollution Burning fossil fuels – Natural Gas, Coal, and Oil are just examples of fossil fuels. Burning of these fuels releases Carbon monoxide, Sulfur dioxide, and Nitrogen oxides. In the 1970’s and late 80’s acid rain was a problem in the state of California Acid rain – Increased acidic then normal. Smog- A yellow-brown haze when sunlight reacts with air pollution.

Destruction of the Ozone layer The earth is protected by layers called the ozone. Chemicals in spray cans (CFC) destroy the ozone layers letting in UV rays. These UV rays are cancer causing of the skin. Layers of Ozone blocks the rays and lets in the good rays.

Global warming This is the trapping of heat by carbon dioxide and other gases in air. Without the greenhouse effect the earth would be too cold to support life. With pollution increase the effect of the greenhouse effect making the earth heat up.

Water Pollution The earth water is polluted with: Sewage Chemicals Garbage Detergents and other house hold waste. Pesticides and fertilizer run off the land into the water Oil spills that kill plants and animals. Which move to lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

Hazardous Waste Hazardous waste have been a 20 th century invention. Man made liquid or solid waste that may endanger human health and the environment. Since 1978 lead based paint, asbestos, lead and unleaded gas. Even house hold items like batteries, bleach, motor oil, antifreeze, some cleaning fluids.

Land Pollution The average American make about 4.4 pounds of trash, or solid waste. These adds up to millions of tons. Lands fills- Huge pits where waste is dumped and buried.

WILT Make a banner explaining the affects of pollution on the environment. It must have information from the power point, and any other information you can find. All information that you use need to be placed on the resource page and the webpage you have used.
