Course Change Policy Once students have selected courses in the spring, it is expected that they will remain in these courses for the entire school year.

Course Change Policy (Con’t) Exceptions which allow for a timetable change: Conflicts Level changes Teacher-initiated changes

Course Change Policy (con’t) Student-initiated changes are not permitted with these exceptions: A student may enquire about a course change prior to the beginning of a semester. After the beginning of a semester, a student may request a course change within the first cycle of classes. After that, it is*IN WRITING ONLY*. This will be decided by our Program Planning Team. Students taking more courses than necessary may drop a course for a free. (Example a grade 12 student with 8 courses) Withdrawing after a particular date (unsure as of yet) will result in a “WD” appearing on the transcript.

Transcripts A transcript is a record of every course you have taken in high school. It includes final marks for all courses at all grade levels. It includes courses failed, repeated and dropped (“WD”) Transcripts are required for post- secondary application and many bursaries and scholarships.

Planning your selection Grade 11 students are required to select at least 7 courses and an alternate. Use the checklist on page 2 of the Course Selection Book to help plan your selection.

Selection Sheet: Step 1 Name

Step 2 Compulsory grade 10 courses you need to repeat.

Step 3 Choose your compulsory courses Check admission requirements carefully. There are special considerations, especially for Math. All universities have a minimum requirement of Academic English and most require 4 other academic subjects. For some degrees, those 4 other subjects are specific. Many college programs require a grad diploma only but some have specific course requirements.

Step 4 Choose the remainder of your courses. Grade 11 courses are listed as well as those grade 12 courses that are available to you.

Step 5 O2 O2 students must choose these three courses. (2 credits) Career Development and Workplace Health and Safety are half credits.

Step 6 Learning Strategies Available if you took it in or if you have had support in the past. You must see Ms. Crozier or Ms. Bent at the Course Fair for approval and a PPT form.

Step 7 Alternate course You will not be allowed to submit your online registration without an alternate. Please consider it carefully as it may be used, especially in the event of a course not being offered.

Step 8 Signatures and Fees You will not be allowed to register without a parent signature Student Fee: $40 (page 5 of booklet)

Step 9 Course Recommendations There must be a signature or a comment from a staff member before you can register for a course. Past teachers for most subject areas Future teachers in some situations Course Fair: March 20 th

Registration March th 2012

Select Carefully…… Our goal is to have as few course changes as possible in September and January. Need some help to ensure this happens? Make an appointment with a counsellor….even after you register. Ask your teachers and parents for advice. Ask teachers what a course you are considering is actually like. This is the purpose of the Course Fair!! Consider all of your post-secondary possibilities and make sure your selection matches up. All university and college info is available on line. Links to Atlantic universities and colleges are on the PVEC website, Department tab, Counselling Centre. Finally…..Take this seriously, put some thought into your choices!

Course Information Spreadsheet Helpful Resource! This is posted online in the Counselling Centre’s Course Registration section.
