 The Senate serves as a jury to impeach the President.  They ratify treaties made with other nations.  The Senate also approves and rejects presidential appointment.

 Over the executive branch: override veto, impeach president, reject/approve treaties  Over the judicial branch: impeach judges

 Made up of the President, Vice President, the colonel, a large bureaucracy.  Main job is to enforce laws passed by congress.

 Qualifications: you have to be at least 35, a natural born citizen, you have to have lived in the U.S. at least 14 years before serving.  President is limited to two terms or a total of 10 years  Salary is 40,000  50,000 expense account, 100,000 travel account

 Same qualifications as the president  Has a salary of 186,000  Leader of the Senate  No term limit for the vice president

 Chief executive: carries out laws of the nation.  Chief legislative officer  Chief Diplomat: appoints ambassadors to other countries, makes treaties and executive agreements.  Chief judicial leader: appoints federal judges, and grants amnesty pardon and reprieve.  Commander in chief: leader of the military  Party leader: most visual and influential member of his/her political party.  Chief of state: symbolic position, represents the U.S.

 Main job is to interpret laws passed by congress and actions of the executive branch  Consists of the supreme court and the other federal judges.  Supreme court is made up of one chief justice and eight associate justices  There are no formal requirements to become a judge  Salary for chief justice is 223,500 and salary for the associate justices is 213,600

 Original: authority to hear a case first  Appellate: authority to hear a case on appeal from a lower court.  Exclusive: the only court authorized to hear a case.  Concurrent: authority shared to hear a case

 Federal district court: have original jurisdiction, only federal court with a trial by jury.  Circuit court: have appellate jurisdiction only over several states and have a panel of three judges to make sure rights weren’t violated by a lower court  Supreme court: can have original or appellate jurisdiction over the whole U.S.

 Over legislative branch: can declare laws to be unconstitutional.  Over executive branch: can declare an act of the president unconstitutional
