Try translating an essay written in text language by a 13-year-old school girl in Scotland. as soon as possible at any rate brother business as usual (a normal routine) complete waste of time Decided Face to face Girlfriend I don’t think so! My summer holidays were a complete waste of time My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It’s great. But my parents were so worried because of the terrorism attack on September 11 that they decided to stay in Scotland and spend two weeks up north. Up north, what you see is what you get: nothing. I was extremely (very very very) bored in the middle of nowhere. Nothing but sheep and mountains. At any rate, my parents were happy. They said that it could be worse, and that they were happy for the peace and quiet. I don’t think so! I wanted to go home as soon as possible, to see my friends (mates) again. Today I came back from school. I feel very saintly because I have done all my homework. Now it’s business as usual.

In English, writing is usually more formal than speech. Speaking v Writing In English, writing is usually more formal than speech. In American universities for example, professors and students may speak rather informally in class. However, the student would still be expected to use a formal tone in writing papers and emails. However, your professor might use a more informal style to email student.

What makes a writing situation formal? Being formal What makes a writing situation formal? writing to someone you don’t know; writing to someone older than you are; writing to someone with a higher social or work status than you - a teacher, professor, boss, team leader, senior member of staff; asking for a big favor (even from someone you know well)

Why would it be wrong to use informal language in a formal situation? Adopting the correct tone Why would it be wrong to use informal language in a formal situation? because it might seem rude; because it might give the receiver a negative impression of the sender; because it might expose your lack of English/cultural/business awareness How about using formal language in an informal situation? it may seem arrogant, cold, or unfriendly
