Create a data table for the following data. With your table partner, measure the distance from each of the following. Using a pencil, 12-in ruler, and a meter stick. Be sure to label the units involved. 1.Length of a book 2.Length of pencil 3. Length of desk 4. Length of your desk to a wall. II. Practice

Light Year The term light year is confusing for many people because it actually measures distance instead of time. One light year is the distance that light can travel in one year. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second; therefore, a light year is 6,000,000,000,000 miles
Light Year Age Using a light year as a distance measurement helps determine age. The light from a star that is 1 million light years away has traveled at the speed of light to reach us. The light we are seeing was created 1 million years ago. So the star we are seeing is really how the star looked a million years ago, not how it looks today.
Distance From Earth the Moon from the Earth? 1.3 light seconds. the Earth from the Sun? 500 light seconds or 8 light minutes. The nearest star? Alpha Centauri at 4.3 light years. the nearest galaxy? The large spiral Andromeda galaxy is about 2.7 million light years away.
How Long does it take to fly to Alpha Centauri? Speed of light : 186,000 miles per second Nearest star after the Sun: Alpha Centauri at 4.3 light years. One light year= 6,000,000,000 (6 trillion miles) Method of travel: X-15 (travels at one mile per second) 11.5 days to travel one million miles years to travel one billion miles. 760,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri.
