1 The wider universe

2 12.5 The Universe The Universe
The Universe is a mind-bogglingly BIG place. If our Solar System was squeezed down to fit inside the Prime Minister’s office, so that the Sun was in the middle and Neptune was where the walls are, where would the nearest star be?

3 12.5 The Universe Where would the nearest star be? here?

4 12.5 The Universe Where would the nearest star be? here?

5 12.5 The Universe Where would the nearest star be? here?

6 12.5 The Universe Where would the nearest star be? here! 16 miles

7 How many stars?

8 How many stars?

9 The speed of light = 300 000 km/s
12.5 Light years Light years A light year is a measure of length. It is the distance light travels in a vacuum in one year 1 light year = km The speed of light = km/s

10 12.5 Light years How long does it take for light to travel from the Moon? The Moon is km away Light travels at km/s ? = 1.2 So it takes 1.2 seconds for light reflected off the Moon to reach us on Earth.

11 Edge of visible Universe
12.5 Light years How far away are space objects from Earth? Moon Sun Voyager space probe Proxima Centauri Andromeda galaxy Edge of visible Universe

12 12.5 Light years Earth to Moon: 1.2 light seconds

13 12.5 Light years Earth to Sun: 8.3 light minutes

14 12.5 Light years Earth to Voyager: 16.3 light hours
Worth mentioning that Voyager is further than this now – recent news article about how it has now left our Solar System

15 Earth to Proxima Centauri:
12.5 Light years Earth to Proxima Centauri: 4.22 light years

16 Earth to Andromeda galaxy:
12.5 Light years Earth to Andromeda galaxy: 2.5 million light years

17 Earth to the edge of the Universe:
12.5 Light years Earth to the edge of the Universe: 46.5 billion light years

18 How far away are space objects from Earth?
12.5 Light years How far away are space objects from Earth? Moon = 1.2 light seconds Sun = 8.3 light minutes Voyager space probe = 16.3 light hours Proxima Centauri = 4.22 light years Andromeda galaxy = 2.5 million light years Edge of visible Universe = 46.5 billion light years

19 12.5 Light years Seeing into the past
The light from the Sun takes just over 8 minutes to get to us. That means the light is 8 minutes old. Light from our next nearest star (Proxima Centauri) is years old. When we look at that star we are looking 4.22 years into the past. The further away we look into space the further into the past we see.

20 What's going on right now?
12.5 Light years What's going on right now? Is it possible to know what is happening anywhere in the Universe right now? We'll just have to wait and see ...

21 The speed of light = 300 000 km/s
12.5 Light years Light years A light year is a measure of length. It is the distance light travels in a vacuum in one year 1 light year = km The speed of light = km/s Pupils should copy this into their books

22 How long does it take for light to travel from the Moon?
12.5 Light years The Moon is km away Light travels at km/s ? = 1.2 Pupils should copy this into their books So it takes 1.2 seconds for light reflected off the Moon to reach us on Earth.
