Quantum Teleportation What does the future hold?
Outline Exploring what Quantum Computing is Terminology Past issues History The future!
Is QT what we think? Probably not Not to be confused with the everyday idea of teleportation
What exactly is being teleported? Qubits (Quantum bits) Bits Vs. Qubits
How to control a Qubit Ion traps Optical traps Quantum dots Semiconductor Impurities Superconducting Circuits
Notation and Medium for communication What does it all mean/what does it look like? A|0> + B|1> Communication channel
Teleportation Charles Bennet (IBM) Problem? CalTech did it! But how? Entanglement is the answer!
What the heck is entanglement? Goes around the Heisenberg uncertainty principle Photon A: The photon to be teleported Photon B: The transporting photon Photon C: The photon that is entangled with photon B
Measuring entangled Qubits The Bell state -Allows us to measure the resulting Qubit Spins (measurement)
Similar to a fax machine Sends data of a copy Destroy original copy Small flaws/ resolution of copy
Example Suppose Alice wants to send a quantum state to Bob Options She can attempt to physically transport the qubit to Bob. She can broadcast this (quantum) information, and Bob can obtain the information via some suitable receiver. She can perhaps measure the unknown qubit in her possession. The results of this measurement would be communicated to Bob, who then prepares a qubit in his possession accordingly, to obtain the desired state. (This hypothetical process is called classical teleportation.)
History of QT 1993 – Bennett proposed this theory 1997 Caltech sends info 1 meter through coaxial cable and create replica photon 2002 – researchers in Australian National University successfully teleport a laser beam 2006 – Niels Bohr Institute teleports information 1.6 feet 2012 – Scientists teleport photons 143 km (89 miles)
Disadvantages with Quantum Computing Difficulty in controlling quantum particles Excess heat created from computing Extremely expensive Not a lot of information known about the subject
Advantages! Much more powerful Faster speeds Smaller Can improve on practical electronics
In conclusion.. Quantum Teleportation Qubits Communication medium Heisenberg & Entanglement BellState History Pros and Cons StarTrek example
