00002-E-16 – 1 December 2001 Profile of HIV/AIDS in Kenya 2.2 million Kenyans are now living with HIV infection. Out of every eight adults in rural Kenya, one is infected. In urban areas, nearly one out of every five adults is infected. About 200,000 have AIDS, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Of the remaining 2 million, most do not know they are infected.
