PAGE 1 Solving Urban Challenges with Data Innovate UK, ESRC and NERC are to invest up to £7.5m in collaborative R&D projects (with a proportion available for relevant feasibility studies) to develop new solutions to urban challenges through their competition 'Solving Urban Challenges with Data'. £500k is reserved for projects which make use of historical or new data from satellites. The UK’s Innovation Network

PAGE 2 Uses of Satellite Data In Urban Environment Large volumes of Earth Observation data is available from free or commercial sources Remote sensing including EO allows assessing various aspects of the modern built environment Data from satellites allows weather prediction including floods or droughts EO and positioning data help to come up with innovative concepts and techniques for sustainable urban development MonitoringAssessingPredictingModelling

PAGE 3 Innovative Uses of Satellite Data To solve urban challenges £500k is reserved for projects which make use of historical or new data from satellites Earth Observation Global Navigation Satellite System Data fusion: innovative combination of satellite data with data from other sources

PAGE 4 Data Sources Examples of historical and new data sources Search for “UK”: 81 datasets, spatial resolution from 300m to 2.4m, including 25 free and open access datasets, 27 free with registration, 18 restricted and 11 commercial Allows browsing data sources and offers plenty of useful resources A planetary-scale platform for environmental data and analysis containing trillions of EO measurements spanning a 40 year period Adding value through data fusion: optical data + SAR, hyperspectral imaging, optical EO data + ground based measurements; huge number of opportunities!
