Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 Sentinels Data Access for Africa

Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 Sentinels Data Access – Challenges and Solutions  Systematic processing and availability of the complete acquired data continuous stream of  corresponding to a sustained generation rate (24h/7d) of a continuous stream of 500Mb/s of user products 500Mb/s of user products (Sentinel-1,-2,-3 A series)  ESA Sentinels ground segment built on top of a powerful and scalable network (up to 40Gbps)  Dedicated 10Gbps connectivity to academic network (GEANT) Including Big Data paradigm and use of innovative solutions  Four types of data hubs tailored to the different use typologies  Progressive inclusion of Research Support & Hosted Processing services  Federation of distributed data hub relays to optimise proximity to end users  Progressive inclusion of Federated User Management

Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 Sentinel Data Access – Four Data Hubs

Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 Open & Free Hub - ‘Science and Other use’ All S1A data available as of 3 rd October Simple self registration >3900 users registered S1A: average of 1TB products generated daily Total volume of data disseminated > 60 TB Data Hub Software (DHuS) provides simple Web Interface, and Powerful API for Scripting Downloads

Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 Assumption: user has a minimum IT (servers) and network infrastructure available Proposed data access solution: network based via, open data hub and automated scripts ESA support: Technical support in setting up of the interface to open access Pick Up Point Reference documentation to retrieve data (e.g. scripting example for systematic download) is available to all users Dedicated hands-on training will be organised in the frame of TIGER Expert Training at ESA, Frascati, 4.-8.05.2015 Pick-up-Point management software (DHuS) will be made available in 2015 via a dedicated open source framework Dedicated engineering support can be organised for extended data access integration and qualification: – Support to definition and setup of user infrastructure – Support to pre-installation on user virtual machines = – Support to integration and interface testing/verification – Contact point: Lena.Stern@esa.intLena.Stern@esa.int Sentinel data access for Africa – Scenario 1

Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 Sentinels data Download – Options for Automation bash$ curl –u user –p password –-metalink https://senthub.esa.int/odata/p roduct?$search=“sentinel AND africa”&$format=metalink Dissemination Network Open Access Pick-up-Point (PuP) Option 1: Scripted download (optionally via download manager) Local Installation Option 2: Local installation of DHuS software at user facilities for improved management of downloaded dataset

Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 Assumption: user has only basic internet connectivity Proposed data access solution: virtual access via on-line Exploitation Platform Exploitation Platform: user accesses EO data, processing software, virtual machines, visualisation tools. Only the final result (e.g. high level product, map, etc) needs to be downloaded Sentinel data access for Africa – Scenario 2 Exploitation platforms EO data In-situ data EO softwares ICT resources An innovative operations concept: users access a platform work environment containing the data and resources required, as opposed to downloading and replicating the data ‘at home’.  Very relevant to user with limited or no IT capabilities Results/discussions Collaboration New model: move the users to the data

Sentinel Data Access for Africa 11 December 2014 ESA support: As part of its R&D EO programme, ESA is developing 6 Thematic Exploitation Platforms: Geohazard, Forestry, Hydrology, Costal, Urban, Polar Platforms will host data from many EO satellites data (e.g. Sentinels, ERS/ENVISAT, Landsat, other Ntl missions) + in-situ datasets + software tools + virtual machines ESA can offer access to these platforms to African users (e.g. R&D, scientists, application developers, services,…) Dedicated hands-on training will be organised in May 2015 in the frame of TIGER Expert Training Besides the above 6 TEPs, ESA is considering the set-up of light user web interface to the TEPs Would need only very small network bandwidth for retrieval of final high level products, maps Sentinel data access for Africa – Scenario 2
