 1. Why does Berne go to the site of the WTC?  She visited Manhattan’s financial district to pay her respects at what used to be the World Trade Center. Understandig the Writer’s Ideas

 2. From where are most of the people at the site visiting?  They came from everywhere such as German, Italy, Japan and there were different ages from children to age. (par. 2) Understandig the Writer’s Ideas

 3. What is special to Berne about the light at the WTC site?  To Berne, ground zero is a great bowl of light. Especially on an overcast morning, it was accompanied by a watery glow. (par. 7) Understandig the Writer’s Ideas

 To express how fast the historical event happened. There were still firefighters, ambulance and the police supporting the scene. That caused ‘‘ suddenly’’ cemetery, gravestones and offerings appearing like mushrooms. 4. What does Berne mean in par 8 and 9 when she says that she noticed the area surrounding the site, including the cemetery ‘‘suddenly’’ ?

 5. Why does Berne find the sight of the WTC ‘‘unbelivable’’ (par.12)?  She got close to the crowd and they were trying to combine the awful images onto emptiness. Understanding the Writer’s Ideas

8. What dose Berne see when she views the site from the deli's dining room? Answer: She sees the pit and the access ramp of the site and someone's remains. Understanding the Writer’s Ideas

9. Berne ends her essay by saying that by visiting the WTC, the “space fills up again.” What does she mean by this? Answer: The WTC used to be prosperous and crowded tides of people. → It were destroyed by the attack. → Many visitors come, making the WTC crowded people again. Understanding the Writer’s Ideas

 It was more like a burial round, than a disaster site.  Being so close to where so many people lost their lives, the site not only combined visitors all and brought the enormous shock to them and the author.

 In paragraph 18, she saw that someone’s remains were carried up toward an ambulance when she was in a pit to see clearly. Everyone stopped eating and some stood up.  It showed that whether out of respect or curiosity, the visitors and she all saw the wide emptiness.

 2. Is the description of the crowd in paragraph 22 effective? Why or why not?  Yes, the description of the crowd is effective.  Berne not only wrote down where the people came from but their various actions to see ground zero, even though there was nothing. Understand the Writer's Techniques

 She created the feeling by describing details about what activities was holding.  It seemed that it was a prosperous construction site and was thriving and blooming.

 She presented many sites near WTC.  Examples: Vesey and Church Streets, St. Paul’s Chapel, South Street Seaport...  The sounds and smells you could feel while reading this.

5. In what way does Berne describe the weather? Answer: Use a gloomy sentence “the raw wind and spits of rain”. 5. Why does she describe it? Answer: To create a dark and plaintive feeling and atmosphere, making readers feel upset and foreshadow the following disaster. Understand the Writer's Techniques

6. In paragraphs 6 through 8, Berne uses the second person, writing that “your eyes adjust” and “you notice the periphery.” Why does she make this switch? Answer: She wants readers also see the same like her, making readers and her both as if see the situation at that time. Understand the Writer's Techniques

7. What is effective about the scene in the deli? Answer: Its effect means that many visitors are as same as the writer come to see a disaster by buying a ticket, in other words, producing an effect that they don't have the same feeling as the local people. Understand the Writer's Techniques

8. What does Berne mean when she writes that “the day flowed back into itself”? Answer: The writer wants to express her thought already return to the reality. Understand the Writer's Techniques

9. Do you think the last paragraph is effective? Why or why not? Answer: It is effective, because the visitors complement the former emptiness and sadness. The last sentence “space fills up again” correlates with the last words “a crowd” in the first paragraph. Understand the Writer's Techniques
