Introduction and usage of Digital Multimeter for measurement of different electrical quantities such as voltage, current, resistance and diode.. By: Engr.Irshad Rahim Memon

 To know about digital multimeter, it’s purpose and usage to measure different electrical quantities.

 A multimeter or a multitester, is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in one unit. A typical multimeter may include features such as the ability to measure voltage, current and resistance. Whereas some multimeters can have some of extra features; such as measuring capacitance, inductance, conductance, decibels, duty cycle, frequency, temperature, continuity, diode, transistor, battery etc electronic measuring instrument voltage, current aresistance.

 Digital display: It show measured value of different functions in digits  Rotary switch: This switch is used to select one of different functions  Function value panel: It shows minimum to maximum values of all functions to be selected  Probe connections: Here probes are plugged in with respect to selected function

 Probes: Probes are the wires that are used to connect multimeter with circuits, components etc for measurement of some function such as current, voltage, resistance etc. One probe will always be plugged in with common connection and other probe will be plugged in with either volt, ohm or ampere as per function requirement and this probe will represent positive end of multimeter

 If it is possible to remove component from circuit and then measure resistance, else turn off any power source connected to component  Turn multimeter on  Set multimeter as an ohm meter  Select lowest scale on ohm meter  Connect multimeter with component (eg. resistor) as shown in the figure 02  If there is no reading, then increase the scale value  Turn off multimeter after use

Multimeter used as an ohm meter

 Turn multimeter on  Set multimeter as a volt meter AC/DC accordingly  Select highest scale on volt meter  Connect multimeter in parallel between two points as shown in figure 03  If there is no reading, then decrease the scale value  Turn off multimeter after use

Multimeter used as an Voltmeter

 Turn multimeter on  Set multimeter as a ampere meter AC/DC accordingly  Select highest scale on ampere meter  Break circuit and connect multimeter in series between two points as shown in figure 04  If there is no reading, then decrease the scale value  Turn off multimeter after use

Multimeter used as an Amperemeter

 Multimeter options are observed and electrical quantities are measured using Multimeter
