Chapter 4 - Lesson 2 B Through the Centuries Chapter 4 Canada

The French and the British pg The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Canada were the Vikings Long ago Vikings lived in what is today the countries of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark In about A.D (Anno Domini) the Vikings crossed the Atlantic Ocean and landed in what is today Newfoundland They did not establish a permanent settlement, and left shortly after they arrived

The French and the British pg

Nearly 500 years passed before other Europeans arrived In the late 1400s and early 1500s, explorers sailing from England and France came to the land that would become Canada In 1497 an Italian explorer named Giovanni Caboto claimed what is now Newfoundland for England

The French and the British pg In 1535 the French explorer Jacques Cartier sailed inland on the St. Lawrence River He claimed the northern land of Canada for France and called it Kanata, which is an Iroquois word meaning “group of huts.”

The French and the British pg Unlike the English, the French sent people to live in the land they called eventually called New France In 1608 Samuel de Champlain started the first permanent French settlement in what is now Canada and named it Quebec

The French and the British pg The French ruled New France for 150 years In 1754 a war began between the French and the British The war was called the French and the Indian War It started in North America and soon spread to Europe

The French and the British pg In 1763 the French and the British ended the war and signed the Treaty of Paris, not to be confused with the Treaty of Paris 1783 which ended another war, which was? As a result of the Treaty of Paris 1763, France lost most of the land they held in the Eastern and Central parts of North America

The French and the British pg The British renamed New France, Quebec and quickly passed the Quebec Act The Quebec Act gave French people living in Quebec, now a British colony, the right to keep their own laws, their own language, and their Roman Catholic religion The people in Canada were happy about the Quebec Act and felt as though they were being treated fairly England only passed this act because they were already having problems with the 13 original British colonies in what would be the U.S. When the 13 colonies finally started their rebellion from Britain, the colony of Quebec did not join them… WHY??????

How did the French and Indian War and the Quebec Act change Canada’s history? (pg.145)

Remember Treaty of Paris 1763 Quebec Act Jacques Cartier Giovanni Caboto
