GENDER IN ACGG PROJECT The Case of Tanzania ……. Most importantly, we want to make gender equality, equity and women’s empowerment a core objective of the program…….ACGG Proposal Presenter Rehema L. Mwateba Independent Social Development Consultant

HIGHLIGHTS Definition terms Participation of women in Agriculture and livestock keeping Overall intentions of ACGG project in relation to gender Proposed gender transformation intervention in Tanzania What has been done:Outline of tools and materials What remains to be done

DEFINITION OF TERMS Gender Women empowerment Gender transformation Gender analysis Gender mainstreaming

WOMEN PARTICIPATION Over percent of active women in Tanzania are engaged in agricultural activities Contributed 24.1 percent of GDP Contributed 30.0 percent export earnings Crop production contributed 17.6 percent of GDP in 2012 In the same year livestock keeping contributed 4.6 percent of GDP

Continued….. Study by TGNP in 2009 on Care economy showed that women spend a lot of time on reproductive, productive and community maintenance roles which is not included in assessing and reporting GDP Social norms, power structures and relations impact on lives and opportunities available to different groups of men and women

Continued……. Different groups of men and women face different barriers in accessing services, economic resources and leadership opportunities eg In 2010 adult population was half men and half women. This did not match the 234:21 male:female ratio of members of parliament

Continued A group of men from Lindi reported 90% ownership and control over resources by men compared to 10% by women. With regards to participation in decision making and leadership participants reported it is a domain of men. The group of men from Lindi estimated participation of men compared to women is 95% and 5% respectively.

OVERALL INTENTIONS OF ACGG PROJECT IN RELATION TO GENDER In the ACGG proposal it has been stated that… Most importantly, we want to make gender equality equity and women’s empowerment a core objective of the program……. and that this should translate to: Increased empowerment of women smallholder farmers in the chicken value chain to be seen across rural communities

What has been done Selected project implementing staff received gender training in Ethiopia in 2015

What has been done….continued A facilitators guide has been adapted. It is in Kiswahili language

What has been done….continued A meeting was held to merge ideas on community IP and gender transformation

What has been done….continued An outline on expected sequence of events has been drafted

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE Development and adoption of modalities for integrating all ACGG intervention activities not gender as a separate entity ie for example include a section that describes gender transformation indicators and how to monitor progress, periodicity of reporting etc Orientation of facilitators to the training guide

Continued…… Gender training, implementation and monitoring and evaluation among household members that will receive chicks as well as project follow up among respective community members Project redesign to allow reallocation of funds to accommodate among other activities, gender training of facilitators, production of materials and reports including gender transformation monitoring and evaluation reports for sharing at all levels
