Blue Valley Middle Schools Math Program

Course Offerings: Integrated Algebra Advanced Integrated Algebra/ Algebra 1  All courses use same CMP3 texts

Integrated Algebra 6, 7, 8 Integrated Algebra has been and continues to be a challenging and appropriate course for most students.

Integrated Algebra 6, 7, 8  CMP3 supports intense study of the underlying mathematical concepts.  CMP3 supports higher level thinking in order to solve problems and complete investigations.  Course pacing is adjusted to student needs. The Blue Valley curriculum for the grade level is covered.

Advanced Integrated Algebra 6,7, Algebra 1  Students enrolled in this course will study additional concepts from the next grade level as well as the required grade level curriculum.  Differentiation occurs through student generated class discussion with teacher facilitation and higher level questioning.  Course is designed to be more exploratory and less teacher led.  Course pacing is accelerated.  Students complete more challenging and less guided homework assignments.

Advanced Integrated Algebra 6, 7, Algebra 1  Students will investigate and apply course concepts to a deeper level of understanding and at an accelerated pace.  The emphasis of this course is to extend the underlying mathematical concepts found in Integrated Algebra.  This course will require the students to complete more challenging problems.

Considerations for Enrollment in Advanced Integrated Algebra 6, 7, Algebra 1:  Has a high interest in math  Is capable of completing homework assignments with little or no adult support  MAP RIT score of 85 th percentile or above  Is flexible in learning  Comfortable with not getting the correct answer right away  Not waiting for the teacher to give the answer  Comfortable with being challenged and not getting an “A” every time

Considerations for Enrollment in Advanced Integrated Algebra 6, 7, Algebra 1:  Capable of producing products that reflect depth of the concepts contained within the lesson  Capable of integrating concepts across multiple units  Has a strong ability to read and interpret word problems

Both courses will:  Emphasize problem-solving and computational accuracy  Emphasize applying skills to solve real-world problems  Expect students to make a commitment to completing homework  Expect students to self-advocate  Expect students to provide oral and written explanations to represent their problem solving process

High School Options

Final Thoughts:  Integrated Algebra is a great fit for all learners.  Advanced Integrated Algebra is a better fit for an independent self-motivated learner.  Both classes offer a rigorous curriculum.  Both classes meet the Blue Valley Curriculum.  Both classes will allow students the opportunity for college math credit if desired.
