Presentation transcript:

The lens of feminist literary theory Like all theoretical “lenses” it helps us look at literature in a new light. There are many different ways to use feminist theory: Examine the way that female characters are portrayed and the way the they interact with male characters Examine the way the female characters either break through or reinforce gender stereotypes Examine the language and symbols that are used and how they are “gendered”. Analyze the gender of the author and how their portrayal of female characters are consistent with reality.

Feminist literary theory asks the reader to consider the relationship between men and women and their roles in society. Many times this relationship is unequal and reflects a patriarchal ideology. patriarchal ideology – what is it? a belief system based on “rule by the male” These unequal relationships may appear in literature and other works of art. Historically, literature has been shaped by men and male thought. However, feminist literary theory DOES NOT INVITE US TO BASH MEN, OR THEIR POINT OF VIEW. MANY MEN GET UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN WOMEN START EXPLORING THESE ISSUES? WHY?

Inequalities in language Working girl vs working boy Woman around town vs. man around town Inequalities in society Sports Entertainers Homewrecker vs. “Just being a man” Inequalities in raising girls vs. boys

Pedro Xisto’s poem Look at the poem entitled “Epithemalion” by Pedro Xisto What does it mean? What are the symbols? What is a feminist reading vs. a traditional reading?
