2014 Duty to God Initiative Great Salt Lake Council Boy Scouts of America S.Chapman 2014

Lord Baden Powell’s main purpose for the Scouting movement was ….? Lord Baden Powell of Gilwell the founder of the Scouting Movement

Baden Powell said the Scouting movement “…is wholly existing and working for the service of God.” 1926 letter from BP to Scouter

“The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law” To ensure this we need to renew our emphasis on our ‘Duty to God’ The Mission Statement of the Boys Scouts of America

BSA RELIGIOUS AWARDS Are programs designed to help ensure a religious focus for Scouts to learn to do their Duty to God How do you view the DUTY TO GOD program? 1 - Award 2 - Checklist 3 - Project 4 - Or is it more?

It is a process, a method, a behavior, a habit, etc. It is a lifelong learning experience that is more about the journey of becoming, rather than simply doing. Duty to God is much more than an award:

As leaders we have a the privilege, responsibility as well as “duty” to help each boy develop a strong moral compass by reinforcing his “Duty to God ” 1)Who will be a living example of the Scout Oath and Law. 2)Who encourages active participation and living religious principles. 3)Who encourages his Scouts to earn their Religious Award. 4)Who reinforces the truthfulness of ethics and moral principles. 5)Who provides opportunities for meaningful service. By being a leader:

We can all do better when it comes to ‘Duty to God’ It’s up to you!!

“Duty to God at the heart of Scouting”
