GENRES! GENRES, AUTHOR’S PURPOSE, and READING STRATEGIES by Melissa Vile GENRES! 1

Learning to read as an adult, in a second language, is challenging! The following series of PowerPoints was created using the latest ELA research and may have some tips to help you read and comprehend more successfully. I have included many resources and multiple slides. Several in each section are very similar. Use what you need and do not mind the order I put them in. This is only to refresh your memory. Also, me or speak to me in class if there is something I have missed. Enjoy!

What is genre? Genre is a style of writing. It helps a reader figure out what they are reading. Example 1: FictionNon-Fiction Mystery Horror Historical Textbook Newspaper Diary

Example 2:

There are two types of literary types or genres: * fiction (not true) * non-fiction (true)

First, decide if a text is non-fiction (true) or fiction (not true). (What is the genre?)

How do you do that? 1. Look at the text. A. Will you learn something new? (non-fiction) or B. Will you be entertained? (fiction)

FICTION vs. NON-FICTION Purpose: To Entertain Purpose: To Learn o Read to enjoy Read for information o Read in order Read in any order o Story Elements Text Features o characters -Table of Contents o setting - index, keywords o problem / plot - glossary, labels o events - diagrams, photo’s o solution - glossary, labels - charts

Fiction

Non-Fiction:

Second, what is the author’s purpose? (Why did the author write it?)

After you decide which genres you are reading, it is helpful to understand the type of text structures that an author uses. Text structures are the organizational pattern an author uses.
