The Design Tool for Civil Engineering projects – an overview Phil Birch & Susan Steensma Cyril Sweett
Aim of training session Discuss the background to the ‘Designing out Waste’ (DoW) process; Explain the role of the tool in helping DoW; Demonstrate how to use the DoW Tool for Civil Engineering projects (DoWT-CE).

The principles of ‘Designing out Waste’
Principles of Designing out Waste Design for: 1. Reuse and recovery 2. Off site construction 3. Material optimisation 4. Waste efficient procurement 5. Deconstruction & flexibility

The Designing out Waste Tool for Civil Engineering projects (DoWT-CE)
DoWT-CE Users: Design team – Civil engineer When: Option preparation and design development stages Inputs: Project elements and approximate dimensions Design team thinking on options to design out waste Outputs: Tabulated reports on the impact of design solutions on project costs, materials requirement, wastage and embodied carbon Cost: A short amount of time is needed to complete the analysis (depending on the project complexity) The tool is free to use Benefits: Helps to identify opportunities to reduce the need for imported materials, minimise wastage and achieve cost savings Can be used for options appraisal by comparing different projects scenarios Provides input for the project’s SWMP Users can include potential savings in tender specification so that tender prices can take account of design decisions Results can be used to demonstrate responsibility
Designing out waste process Design review workshop Decide on actions to reduce waste through design SWMP Record indicative waste forecast and waste prevention actions Design tool Produce an indicative waste forecast Design tool Enter actions and calculate impacts
Example – Headline results The engineer used the DoWT-CE to: Identify opportunities to Design out Waste understand the cost of waste set actions to reduce waste arisings increase the recovery of waste
Explanation of data hierarchy Element – A fundamental aspect of civil engineering i.e. earthworks/drainage/etc Sub Element – An aspect of an element i.e. a type of drainage option Component – Sub elements comprise of a number of components. For example drainage options would consist of pipe, bedding, top soil etc (all of which are components)
