Good morning, Hampton Vale, and welcome to our new week together. As you wait, take time to reflect on this question: Why are candles and the light that they give off so important to a number of faiths? Monday, 7 th December 2015

Yesterday saw the start of Hanukkah, which means Festival of Light. The festival lasts for eight days and will end on Monday next week. It is an important festival for people who follow the Jewish faith.

The Hebrew calendar, which people who follow Judaism observe, uses different periods of time. Hannukah begins on the 25 th day of Kislev and ends on the second day of Tevet.

Because the name of the festival is translated into English from the Hebrew alphabet, you may see it written in several different ways: Chanukah Hannukah Hannukkah Hanukah The first sound of the name is a sound that is not used in English; it is a noise made at the back of the throat, a little like a croak.

The ancient Greeks invaded the temple that the Jews believed was the most holy of places.

This is the menorah. How many candles can it hold? Why is that number important?

How will you help to light up others today?
