Overview of the Life of Jesus

Birth of Jesus The story of Jesus’ Birth is called the Nativity. Found in Matthew and Luke. Basic Facts: Mary agreed under free will to be the mother of Christ, Mary conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit, Jesus means “God Saves”, and Jesus is a descendent of King David.

Reaction to His Birth King Herod, the Jewish King at the time, felt threatened by Jesus and he has children of Bethlehem killed. Jesus and his family escape to Egypt and when they return, they settle in Nazareth.

Jesus’ Youth Lived a humble and obedient childhood and learned how to be a carpenter from Joseph.

The Call of the 12 The 12 Apostles represent the 12 Tribes of Israel. (A New Israel) He selected them all from humble backgrounds and wanted them to learn how to pass on his teachings.

Key Events: Baptism Baptism by John the Baptist is the start of his public life. All three persons of the Trinity are present at his Baptism.

Key Events: Temptation in the Desert Jesus went on an intense 40 Day retreat in the Desert. There he was tempted by Satan just as the Hebrews were tested for 40 years in the Desert.

Proclaiming the Gospel Jesus proclaimed the “Good News” through his Transfiguration (Shows Gods Glory). He does this both at his resurrection as well as earlier in front of three of his disciples.

Paschal Mystery This is Jesus proclaiming the gospel through his Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension. This is reusing humanity from sin and death.
