SAMPLE QUESTION

 10 questions  For each question, you will be asked to identify: a) The speaker (1 mark) b) The dramatic situation (1 mark) c) The dramatic significance (2 marks)

1. “..It/was my turquoise; I had it of Leah when I was a bachelor. I would not have given it for a wilderness of monkeys.” a) Speaker: Shylock (Act 3, Scene 1) b) Dramatic Situation: Shylock is talking to Tubal and Tubal informs him that after Jessica ran away, she spent lots of Shylock’s money and even gave a family heirloom (ring) in exchange for a monkey. Shylock is furious and expresses that he is very hurt when he learns this because the ring belonged to his widow.

c) Significance: This quote is significant because it implies that perhaps Shylock does not view money as the most important thing in the world. His anger over losing something sentimental suggests that Shylock does have a sensitive side.
