Teaching and learning online: building learning communities How to assess online learning Patricia Fidalgo Mariza Alves Sandra Saraiva João Paz Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologias da UNL Janeiro de 2010

How to assess online learning «The evaluation problem is recurrent in the educational context and is linked to conceptions of teaching and learning in force at all times, which conditioned not only one or other function of the evaluation - the diagnostic function, formative function and summative function - but also the tools and techniques used for evaluative purposes» (Miranda, 2009, p. 131)

How to assess online learning The new context of online distance education poses a number of important issues regarding the assessment Frequent questions: ◦ Verification of the identity of the student; ◦ How to assess the processes and not just products; ◦ How to relate to the evaluation component a relevant and timely feedback.

How to assess online learning «(…) Is through the monitoring of the learning process, through knowledge of the motivations, interests and difficulties of each student, through frequent interaction with each of them, that even in a distance we can build a relationship of knowledge and build a profile of each participant in a distance learning course, we can, within certain limits, to recognize their productions (output)» (Miranda, 2009, p. 132)

How to assess online learning To create a student profile we should diversify evaluation moments, sources and assessment tools that allow us (teachers9 a cross-checking (set of measures that give authenticity to the learning process) Implementation of continuous practices of evaluation - Example: digital portfolios

How to assess online learning Portfolios digitais ◦ Advantages  Representation potential :  1) of the products resulting from the work and learning  2) highlight the learning process that takes place over time  3) promotes reflection  4) promotes de communication skills  5) allows the teacher a continuous monitoring of the students and the management of feedback  6) allows the teacher to readjust his course strategies

How to assess online learning  «Online (or electronic) portfolios can feature multiple examples of student work, can be rich in context, can offer opportunities for selection and assessment, and can offer a look at development over time» (Miliam et al., 2004, p.79)

How to assess online learning

The portfolios of learning and assessment should be developed gradually Should include a focus on personal reflection on the work carried out and the learning Should make use of the potential of technology support in order to include different languages and formats
