Nutrition in Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Recovery Brie Lagerewskij Sheva Balkany Deakin University

How our project was born o Clients presenting with poor eating habits and nutritional deficiencies (inadequate food intake, weight loss, digestive complications and micronutrient deficiencies) + o Fewer than expected referrals to dietetics from ATOD team = Our Project

Goal: To build the capacity of Knox Social and Community Health’s (KSCH) Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) team to provide nutritional intervention to people attending ATOD counseling o Literature review on nutrition in ATOD recovery o Conducted two ATOD nutrition in recovery professional development sessions based on literature review findings o Created Resources Dietitian referral screening tool Client information brochure

Literature Review Conducted a literature review to assess peer reviewed nutrition information that would assist clients on recovering from use of ATOD substances.

Project Evaluation o All strategies and objectives completed o Increased motivation among the team to address nutrition in recovery o Limitation: Not all ATOD team members were present at the professional development sessions

Dissemination & Future Directions o Research findings presented at the dietetics team meeting o Literature review, presentation slides, resources and project report ed to ATOD and dietetics teams o Now incumbent on the ATOD and dietetics team to maintain increased collaboration o Development of additional resources for the ATOD team and their clients
