Core-C5S8T2pg37-42 Aiming and Firing

Purpose This lesson introduces you to the basic techniques for firing an aimed shot at a target.

1. Aim at a target from the standing position. 2. Learn how correct breathing enhances control and relaxation. 3. Shoot in the standing position while performing the basic techniques for firing a shot.

CPS Lesson Questions (1-2)

How ready are you to learn today? A.Not very ready… my mind is distracted by other things. B.A little slow to get going… but staring to wake up. C.Good to go.. bring on the lesson. D.I am focused, alert, energized, and ready to learn!

How many different targets are used in JROTC three-position air rile shooting? A.One B.Two C.Three 1.BMC (Basic Marksmanship Course) target 2.The official competition target

How do you think the new shooting techniques from the previous lesson will benefit you? List 2-3 benefits. (Use CPS “Pick a Student” for this question.)

Two different targets are used in JROTC three- position air rifle shooting. 1. BMC (Basic Marksmanship Course) target The BMC target is printed on a 6 1/2”x7” card, has a 15.25mm 10-ring and nine additional scoring rings that are each mm larger.

Two different targets are used in JROTC three- position air rifle shooting. 2. Official Competition Target (Ten Bullet Target) The official 10-meter air rifle “ten-bull target” is printed on an 8 1/2” x 12” card. Each of its ten record and two practice targets have 0.5mm 10-rings (dots)

To shoot rifles accurately, it is necessary to stop _________ while aiming and releasing the trigger. breathing

 Breath normally before firing the shot. Breath normally  Exhale and hold breath until shot is fired.  Resume normal breathing after the shot is fired. Exhale, hold breath Shot fired Resume normal breathing

Step 1: Align the sights by looking through the rear sight and center the front sight in the rear sight opening.

Step 2: Point the aligned sights at the target so that the bull’s-eye appears in the center of the front sight aperture.

CPS Lesson Question (3-4)

How many targets are on the official competition target? A.5 B.10 C.12 2 “practice targets” and 10 “record targets”

Which sequence represents the correct order of controlled breathing for air rifle shooting? A.Breath normally / fire / exhale / hold breath B.Breath normally / exhale / hold breath / fire C.Hold breath / fire / exhale / breath normally

 If a laser pointer were attached to the barrel, the “hold” movement trace of a beginner shooter might look like this.  It is natural to have some movement of the front sight aperture around the bull’s-eye while aiming. The magnitude of this movement is called the shooter’s ____. hold

 The “hold” movement trace of a champion shooter might look like this.  It is natural to have some movement of the front sight aperture around the bull’s-eye while aiming. The magnitude of this movement is called the shooter’s ____. hold

Here are a few tips that will help you hold your rifle as steady as possible:  Be sure your standing position is correct. Keep the left arm on your side, directly under the rifle.  Relax the muscles in your left arm and legs.  Accept your hold movement as natural.  Concentrate on your sight picture.

 Be sure to follow the instructions of the instructor or range officer.  Turn your body 90 degrees away from the target and stand with your feet shoulder width apart.  Relax your left arm and legs and let the rifle’s hold movements settle down.  Center the front sight movements over the bull’s- eye and smoothly press the trigger.

Which of the following is NOT a good tip for decreasing the area of your “hold?” A.Tighten the muscles in your arms. B.Accept your hold movement as natural. C.Concentrate on your sight picture.

Target shooting requires patience and perseverance. List 2-3 ways that these skills can be applied in your everyday life. (Use CPS “Pick a Student” for this question.)
