Identity Construction Social Media, the individual as producer and the power of producers

Are you the same person you were 5 seconds ago? How do you know?

Memory and Identity John Locke (1690) “Personal Identity consists of memory.”

John Locke argued that real identity is found in psychological continuity, not the physical continuity of the body. Personal identity for Locke is a matter of the continuity of consciousness from one moment to another. As such, identity is not a matter of the physical substance of the person, but rather the consciousness that unites the person ’ s different actions. The mind of a person is the thing that really ‘ underpins ’ who they are for Locke, and it is this mind that makes the different connections between their different and varied experiences.

Locke and Memory The key to Locke ’ s account of psychological continuity is memory. For Locke, a person is the ‘ same ’ person over time if they have the same ‘ reservoir ’ of memories. A person may change physically from childhood onwards, but if they have the same basic memory structure then they are the ‘ same ’ person.

How does Social Media shape ID? Consider how it can shape… Collective ID? AND Individual ID? What part does Globalisation play in the construction of ID?

How does Social Media shape ID? Does more availability of options mean more identities can be created?

Identity Theories Consider the following set of theories. Categorize them – use your own opinions to do this. Discuss why you have categorized them. Which do you agree with? Why? Come up with your own theory to explain how identities are constructed.

Theory ID is constructed by yourself from current ideologies and personal experience. Is there evidence to support this? What is missing?

Group Case Study ‘Class ID in Reality TV’ Consider the idea that young people are particularly vulnerable to the mass media, and it’s ‘available cultural symbols, myths and rituals’. How does the mass media contribute to the construction of identity?

‘Class Identity’ in ‘Reality TV’ Mind map ideas to get started on this topic. What are the issues we need to address? What media products could we use to focus the study? Explore how the audience respond Explore the issues and debates Explore range of theories and perspectives

‘Class Identity’ in ‘Reality TV’ Key Products Posh People: Inside Tatler (BBC Two) Life is Toff (BBC Three) Benefit Street (Channel 4) Celebrity Big Brother (Channel 5) Supporting Products (and more) Official Twitter feeds for programmes & Print Platform material Big Brothers Bit on the Side – spin off show Benefit Britain: Live debate This Morning featuring ‘Toff’ family

‘Class Identity’ in ‘Reality TV’ We are going to do a brief overview of the case study together. Delegate areas to each other and let’s get researching! We will look at the study during next lesson when we will try to apply it to a question.

Your Case Study Choose an area of identity to focus on; Class, Masculinity/Femininity, Age, Ethnicity… Choose a media output to focus on; Film/Drama, Reality TV, Lifestyle genre, Sports, News… Use the Grid as a checklist to carry out your research in each area.

Homework Begin looking for key products to use for your case study. You need 4, but you can use Reality TV as one. Complete your case study grid.
