Planning – The Clichés  OK, time to get serious …  When I was a student the saying was: The sooner you get behind … … the longer you have to catch up!  I’ve tried it … it doesn’t work!  One of the best planning clichés I know though is: If you fail to plan … … you plan to fail! 23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies18

The Difficulty Planning for the Future  Planning: land use planning, business strategic planning, family planning, agricultural planning, travel planning  … any type of planning for your future can be difficult  Whenever you have a difficult task, break it down to make it more manageable  When planning anything, you can do this by asking and answering 4 simple questions  I use this method with all my work and in my personal life 23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies19

23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies20 The 4 Questions  Where are we now?  Where are we going?  Where do we want to be?  How do we get there?  Normally I do this with community groups, so I use the collective we

23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies21 Question 1: Where are we now?  Ask yourself: where are you now?  Look at what existing issues you have: What do like about your life? What don’t you like about your life? What concerns do you have about tomorrow? ????? 2016 The Future

23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies22 Question 2: Where are we going?  Then ask yourself where are you going?  In other words, where will you end up if you change nothing about your life?  What do you anticipate will be good or bad about that outcome? ?????

23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies23 Question 3: Where do we want to be?  Now ask yourself where do you want to be?  Carry this out in two steps: First, decide a horizon year and where you want to be at that time – this is your overall goal (be realistic about the horizon year – a stretch target is good, but don’t go too far). Second, look backwards from the future in increments (2-4 years, 2-4 months, 2-4 weeks – whatever is appropriate) and identify key strategies to achieve your goal. ?????

23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies24 Question 4: How do we get there?  Finally, ask yourself how do we get there?  Part of this has been done by the key strategies that you identified in Question 3  But now, you need to take the first of those strategies and work out an action plan.  Your action plan might take the form of:  One or more objectives; and  Implementation criteria for each of those objectives.

Putting It Altogether  OUTCOMES  Goal  Objectives  IMPLEMENTTAION  Strategies  Actions 23/05/2015Paul Summers Planning Strategies25
